Obituary for Joan M. Muchmore (Stenger)

Joan M. Muchmore (nee Stenger) age 90 of Mt. Washington, died August 8, 2023. She was the beloved wife of 60 years to the late Donald E. Muchmore, devoted mother of Don Muchmore, John (Tracy) Muchmore, Mary (Mike) Hedrick, Betty (Chris) Ford, Michael (Tami) Muchmore, Matt (Abigail) Muchmore, and the late Cathy Muchmore, loving grandmother of Tim, Lars, Megan, Jasmine, Michael, Daniel, Molly, Brian, Madeline, Nicholas, Garrett, Isaac and the late Isabella, caring great-grandmother of Robby, Brie, TJ, Hailey, Finleigh, Eleanor and Julian and dear sister of the late Mildred (Leo) Sunderman (nee Stenger).

Born December 22, 1932, in Norwood, Ohio to John Jr and Mildred Stenger, Joan M. Muchmore (nee Stenger) was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who devoted her life to her family and faith. She passed away at home surrounded by her family on August 8, 2023.

From a young age, Joan helped her parents with their restaurant business, Stenger’s Cafe, carrying menu items from her home to the cafe on Vine Street via streetcar. She also developed a love of sports, enjoying outings to River Downs and Crosley Field with her father. As a Rosie Red, Joan continued her love of the Reds as an adult. A long-standing supporter of both the Xavier men’s and women’s basketball teams, she rarely missed a game.

Joan not only enjoyed sports as a spectator, she participated as well. As a teen, Joan played basketball and volleyball at St. Mary’s School. She was one of the first female coaches for girls' soccer in southwest Ohio. Joan was a decorated Senior Olympian, most notably winning a gold medal in Badminton, with her sister Mimi.

Joan married Donald E. Muchmore on May 16, 1953. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2013. She had 7 children, Don, John, Mary Betty, Mike, Matt, and Cathy who preceded her in death (1956).

As a devout Catholic, Joan was an active parishioner of Guardian Angels Church for nearly 70 years. Joan served her parish community by giving her time as a communion distributor to the sick, cleaning the Church vestments and maintaining the parish gardens. Joan devoted nearly 40 years as an active member of the Guardian Angels Christ Renews group during which she shared her faith with her beloved friends, as they lived out the Word of God.

Much of Joan’s time was spent outdoors with her family appreciating the beauty of nature, both in her own yard and at various parks and arboretums nearby. She had a green thumb, and with the help of her daughters, tended to her lush gardens as often as possible. She also loved watching the birds, feeding them every day without fail.

Joan’s family is left with many fond memories of reading books together, baking cookies, traveling, gardening, watching sports, and enjoying each other’s company on holidays.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Guardian Angels Church on Thursday, August 17th at 10:30 am. Friends may visit at T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave., Mt. Washington, on Wednesday, August 16th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. If desired, memorials may be directed to Guardian Angels Church or McNicholas High School.
