Obituary for Mary Dixon Deonier (Dixon)

Mary Elizabeth Dixon Deonier

April 24, 1937 - March 11, 2023

Devoted daughter, loving sister and aunt, cherished friend, beloved mother, and adoring grandmother, Mary passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.

All her life she held warm memories of her happy childhood growing up with her siblings in the small college town of Ames, Iowa. Mary went on to travel the country and the world and basked in the art and architecture of many beautiful cities around the globe.

Mary went through college and graduate school at Iowa State University and went on to become a professor of interior design and later worked for the City of Cincinnati ending her career in the Department of Transportation & Engineering in City Hall.

She raised her family in Oxford, Ohio and created many radiant memories with her children. As a natural storyteller, she brought the strands of her family's past and present together while reliving joyful memories and lessons learned.

She was an artist who enjoyed drawing, painting, pottery, and jewelry making, and she was particularly gifted in textile arts. Mary was a brilliant crafter as well and especially enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She was an immaculate seamstress who sewed perfect clothing and household pieces and enjoyed stitching quilts for the children at Cincinnati Children's Hospital with her quilting circle in her retirement.

To friends and family, she was a glowing example of generous giving. She baked birthday cakes for her coworkers. She sewed kitchen curtains and altered dresses and delivered homemade muffins. She took her cooking to every gathering, and it always stole the show.

She had a gift for bringing unexpected, delightful laughter and for engaging people with her bright and buoyant conversation. She made fast friends everywhere she went. She was the sunshine to her loved ones. Her laughter and love will live on and continue to weave through our world.
