Obituary for Rev. David E. Hammers

David E. Hammers, 72, passed away surrounded by his beloved family on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Hospital ICU in Florence, KY. Preceded in death by his mother, Lois Hammers (nee Sabo), and father James Hammers. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Hammers (nee Blanchette), and two daughters Melissa Hammers and Stephanie Hammers-Fugate (Earl), and his only grandchild Zachary David Fugate. David also has one sister, Penny Hage in FL and brother, Dennis Hammers (Debbie) of Valparaiso, IN. He has 2 lovely nieces, Kelly (Justin) and Katie (Ty) and a wonderful nephew Jason Fulkerson David's greatest joy was taking care of his family. He cherished the time he spent with his wife, 2 daughters, son-in-law and Grandson-Zachary David. David and his family traveled the world (including all 50 states) making precious memories. His sweet Honeybee, Melissa was his best sidekick, up for any adventure he could imagine. His youngest daughter, Stephanie was a true partner and he loved watching her grow and accomplish so much. One of his proudest moments was when she completed her Doctorate degree last spring. In the last couple of summers, every weekend you would hear David at Zachary David's baseball games, cheering on the team and calling out, That's MY Grandson!! His family is strengthened through his love and example. David's life was one of ministry from his education at Bob Jones University, Seminary at Grand Rapids, and Masters degree at Xavier University, to his first church in Mobile Alabama, then Otsego MI, and Forestville Baptist Church in (Anderson Twp.)Cincinnati. He was the high school principal at Calvary Christian School in Taylor Mill Kentucky before spending several years at Shepherds Home in Union Grove, WI. His final ministry was as Executive Director of Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington, KY for 21 years. His Christ like compassion and servant's heart was a testimony to his love of people and his Lord. One thing that could be said about David, David never met a stranger. His love of life and enthusiasm was palpable and energized any room he walked into. Anyone who met David knew he cared for them and he never missed an opportunity to ask, How can I best pray for you?... His legacy will live on through the lives he touched, he will be greatly missed here on earth, but we know he is rejoicing in Heaven with his family and friends who went before him. A visitation is planned for Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 11 am - 12 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 3711 Tibbatts Street, Covington, KY, with service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Memory of David E. Hammers in care of the Ark Encounter, P.O. Box 510, Hebron, KY 41048. https://arkencounter.com/ David will be laid to rest in Michigan at Norton Cemetery in Norton Shores, MI following a memorial graveside service in late spring.
