Doris Bruce Sylvester, age 93, passed peacefully on May 27, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio, following a long illness courageously faced with grace and many recoveries. Born April 29, 1932, in La Plata, Missouri, Doris was the only daughter of Ray Sylvester Bruce and Mildred Gudehus Bruce.
In 1952, Doris married Robert Jackson Sylvester. Their journey began in La Plata and took them across 48 states, including California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, and North Carolina, as Bob's career with AT&T advanced. Bob and Doris retired in North Carolina in 1986. Doris dedicated herself to her children and profession as a secretary and bookkeeper, distinguishing herself through efficiency, diligence.
A passionate supporter of her children, Bruce and Jannette, Doris wholeheartedly devoted herself to family and community, volunteering countless hours to cub scouts, girl scouts, church committees, while the kids were in school and later Kidney Foundation, Union Institute and notably serving as Treasurer of Helping Hands Clinic in Sanford, NC until age 80. Her efforts were recognized with North Carolina's Governor's Award for Volunteer Service in 2013.
Doris loved golf, gardening, needlework, cooking, and collecting stamps and coins; she was an avid follower of SEC basketball, especially cheering for UNC.
Doris is survived by her children, Bruce (Carole) Sylvester (nee Dole) and Jannette (Gary) Linnemann. Grandchildren Kevin (Meg) Sylvester, Lauren (Chris) Nicholson (nee Sylvester), Kyle (Kate) Linnemann, and Taylor (Katelyn) Linnemann and four grandchildren, Sylvia and Evie Nicholson and Elliott and Blaire Linnemann. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Bob. A family inurnment will be held in La Plata, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
