Glenn W. Amann, age 90, passed away on Dec. 7, 2025. Husband of the late Wanda J. Amann, loving father of Callie Amann, Tracy (Dave) Erhold, Cyndi (Barry) Reed, the late Glenn Amann Jr. and Trudy Carroll, stepfather of Paula Purdon and the late Paul Purdon, proud Papa of Elizabeth, Steven, Chase, Dane, Corey, Lori and Zac and great grandfather of Kobey, Destiny, Dmitry, Kalony, Kingsley, Kainen, Avery and Cameron, caring uncle of Allan, Chad, Victor and Brad, dear brother of the late Ellen R. (John) Edwards.
Glenn was known by many and loved by just as many. A true gentle giant... you couldn't let his height fool you into thinking he was anything, but such a sweet and caring soul! Glenn was born on December 6, 1935 to William F. and Carrie (Sharp) Amann. He attended Withrow High School from September 1949 to June 1952.
On February 3, 1953, during the Korean War, Glenn joined the United States Navy. Enlisting in our military as a Navy man at the tender age of 17, Glenn specialized in Morse code and served his country through communications. This was something, even well into his eightees, he could still do at will, recalling every dah and dit with precision that all of his family would marvel at. He completed boot camp at Bainbridge, Maryland and attended Radio and Communication School in San Diego. Seaman Amann shipped out to Guam for 13 months. He then returned to Cheltenham, Maryland as a Communications Operator. He earned his high school diploma in Washington D.C. in September 1956. Petty Officer 3rd Class was honorably discharged on December 5, 1966 with a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Ribbon.
Joining the Cincinnati police force afterwards, would propel him into yet another way to protect and serve. Glenn joined the Cincinnati Police Division in the 35th Recruit Class on March 24, 1958, in which he was elected Class President. On June 24, 1958, he was promoted to Patrolman, issued Badge Number 4, and assigned to District 6 (3205 Erie Avenue). On September 6, 1959, he was rotated to District 1 (310 Lincoln Park Drive. A year later, Patrolman Amann returned to District 6. In June 1963, he earned an Associate of Science Degree at Chase College. Patrolman Amann was one of the first group of men to be promoted to the new rank of Police Specialist on February 22, 1966, issued Badge PS-4, and assigned to Crime Bureau (City Hall). Six months later, Specialist Amann returned to District 6 as an investigator. He was promoted to Sergeant on April 14, 1968, issued Badge S-31, and assigned to District 7 (813 Beecher Street). Once again, on December 22, 1968, Sergeant Amann returned to District 6. Sergeant Amann was transferred back to District 1 on October 18, 1970 and assigned to Sector 6 (Central Business District). On May 24, 1971, while riding with Patrolman Louis Smith, they responded to a report of a man firing at pedestrians from the back of a taxicab. They found and blocked the cab at 13th and Pendleton, alighted from their vehicle toward the man, and as he pointed the semiautomatic pistol at Patrolman Smith, Sergeant Amann stepped up and took the pistol from his hands. For his valor, he was later recognized with awards from a couple of groups. Sergeant Amann retired on June 2, 1979 with almost 25 years of service to his country and community and 26 letters of appreciation and/or commendation. Moreover, he became head of security for a major department store and then ultimately started his own security company, excelling as a great business owner.
Sergeant Amann died two hours after his 90th birthday on December 7, 2025, at 2 a.m. He was the 5th oldest living retired Cincinnati Police Sergeant and the last living member of the 35th Recruit Class.
Glenn was ever so proud of his accomplishments, but in his heart, nothing was more important to him than his loved ones. A family man through and through, he worked hard for his wife and children and gave them the best lives he could provide. Our superhero, didn't wear a cape....he wore uniforms!!
