Larry Alan Raymond, M.D., age 89, passed away on August 15, 2025, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent his last moments in deep prayer with his spiritual advisor and pastor, Mark Putnam.
A distinguished physician, devoted family man, lifelong learner, and devoted Christian, Larry's life was marked by intellectual curiosity, professional excellence, and a deep appreciation for both science and the arts.
Born on July 28, 1936, in Louisville, Kentucky, Larry was the son of Clarence and Beulah Raymond. He graduated from Fern Creek High School in 1954 and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville in 1958. His passion for learning led him to pursue medicine at the University of Louisville Medical School, where he earned his M.D. in 1962.
Following medical school, Larry completed post-graduate training in Ophthalmology with internships, residencies, and fellowships that took him to Pennsylvania, San Francisco, and St. Louis.
His dedication to advancing eye care culminated in a long and fulfilling career at the University of Cincinnati. From 1972 until his retirement in 2007, Larry served as Director of the Retinal-Vitreous Service at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Even after retiring officially, he continued seeing patients one afternoon a week until Covid struck, in March 2020.
Throughout his career, Larry contributed significantly to the field of ophthalmology. He authored dozens of articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals and wrote textbook entries that helped shape the understanding and treatment of retinal diseases for generations of physicians.
Before embarking on his career, Larry served as a U.S. Army medical officer from 1963 to 1965. Stationed primarily near the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea and later at Fort Knox in Kentucky, it was during this time that he met Carole-then an elementary school teacher on base-who would become his beloved wife and lifelong companion.
Larry is survived by Carole; their children Steve (Robin) Raymond and Kim (Tony) Wolke; grandchildren Hannah Wolke, Zoe Raymond, and Pearl Raymond; sister-in-law Betty Whitaker; and nieces Shelby Nodler and Diana Rodriguez. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Beulah Raymond; father- and mother-in-law Phillip and Ella Nodler; and brothers-in-law Don Nodler and Bill Whitaker.
Though medicine became his profession, music remained a cherished part of Larry's life. As a student at the University of Louisville, he studied both musical composition and chemistry before ultimately choosing medicine. In his down time he often retreated to his den to play piano or immerse himself in books exploring two enduring interests: Christianity and Benjamin Franklin.
Larry shared with Carole a love for reading-a passion they passed down to their children and grandchildren. His thoughtful observations on human behavior were often laced with humor or insight drawn from a lifetime of reflection.
A man who embraced life's quirks with good humor, Larry was known for his distinctive dancing style-especially memorable at his children's weddings-and an offbeat wit that endeared him to friends and family alike.
He also came to share Carole's affection for Yorkshire Terriers. Early in their relationship she told him plainly: "Love me, love my dog." What began as compliance grew into genuine affection for each little companion they welcomed into their home over the years.
Dr. Larry Alan Raymond leaves behind a legacy defined not only by professional achievement but also by warmth, intellect, humor, and devotion to those he loved most.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
