Lauren A. Besignano

October 13, 1950 — December 21, 2025

Lauren Ann Malone Besignano, 75, was born on Staten Island to CAPT Francis Edward and Constance Shaffer Malone, the oldest of their seven children. Although her father's Naval career brought the family to Honolulu, Hawaii; Newport, Rhode Island; Monterey, California; Norfolk, Virginia; Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Colonial Heights, Virginia, Lauren considered Staten Island her home. She attended the Academy of St Dorothy, Sacred Heart, and Saint Joseph Hill before graduating from Wagner College with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1972. The following May, Lauren married John Lawrence Besignano, Sr, of Manhattan.

Lauren began her career in the payroll division of the United States Postal Service, where she was responsible for pay to all east coast rural carriers. Upon the birth of her second child, Lauren was a homemaker for several years. She resumed her career at St. Vincent's Hospital, again in payroll, and where her beloved granddaughters would later be born. She then transitioned to the New York City Department of Transportation Office of Payroll Management. Over fifteen years with DOT, she additionally held positions in the Equal Employment Opportunity Office and as the Director of Administration for Staten Island Ferries, before returning to Payroll as the Director.

Settling in Great Kills, they welcomed daughter, Catherine Malone, and son, John Lawrence, Jr. Lauren was an active parishioner at the Church of St. John Neumann, where she served as a Lector and CCD instructor. In 2011, while her son-in-law, Bill, deployed to Africa and then Afghanistan, Lauren welcomed Kate home so she could add granddaughters CiCi and Caro to the family. In 2017, the couple retired to Cincinnati, OH, following years of visits there to son, Jack, and daughter-in-law, Julie.

Lauren is survived by her devoted husband, John; daughter, Major Catherine DeLeal, USMC, (Col William DeLeal, USMC), granddaughters, Cecilia Constance and Caroline Aurelia; son, John Jr. (Julie Rode); and siblings - Constance (Robert) Hylton, Noelle (Kenneth) Zimms, Denise Rafferty, Edward Malone, Jr, Patrick Malone, and Timothy (Christina) Malone.
