Shirley Jean Oyler (nee Ackerman) age 90 of Anderson Twp., OH and formerly of Batesville and Mountain View, AR, and Bloomington and Normal, IL, passed away May 13, 2026. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Dale Oyler, devoted mother of Judith D. Oyler, Jennifer G. (Steven) Darst, Jeffry D. ( Su Hyun) Oyler, and James H. Oyler, loving grandmother of Casey (Nik) Schroeder, Kirby (Carl) Pickl, Wesley (Joshua) Tarwater, Jonathan (Kaitlyn) Darst, and Lian, William, Evan, and Emory Oyler, caring great-grandmother of Nathaniel, Derek, Isabelle, and Sophia Schroeder and Timothy Tarwater, and dear sister of Mary Sue Compton and Don Albert Ackerman.
Shirley was raised on a farm during her early years, with her 2 older siblings, by their mother Edith Reves. She became an excellent typist in high school which led to a secretarial job after graduation. When she and her husband Dale started their family, she quit work to become a full-time mother. Together they raised 4 talented children. Some of her interests were sewing clothes - she made many outfits for the children, and knitting throw blankets and sweaters. She became a great campfire cook during the annual family camping trips.
Shirley was an avid reader of magazines like National Geographic and books from the library. She instilled a love of reading and learning in all her children. Since her husband worked for the airlines, Shirley embraced traveling to the many places she had read about. The family's first trip was to Europe and later she traveled to South Korea and Canada. She wanted to see as many U.S. states as possible and visited several historical places on the East Coast. In her later years, she traveled West to experience our beautiful national parks - the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Badlands, and Glacier.
Becoming a grandmother and then great-grandmother to so many were each very special moments. She enjoyed choosing books and gifts especially for each child. 'Grandma' Shirley spent time reading books with each one, sharing baking tips, going to the playground and swimming pool, and going out to lunch. All of her joy came from being with her family.
Funeral service will be held at T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave., Mt. Washington, on Thursday, May 21st at 11 a.m. where family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. until time of service. A private family interment will be held at Flatwoods Cemetery in Mountain View, AR.
