Stephen M. Murphy

June 6, 1947 — December 24, 2022

Stephen (Steve) Michael Murphy, 75, passed away of a pulmonary embolism on December 24, 2022. He was with family at the time of his passing. Steve is survived by his three daughters, Shannon Sutton, Laura Hanson, and Katie (Davy) Odom, seven grandchildren, and nine siblings.

Steve was born in Hamilton, OH, to the late Neil and Marie Murphy. The oldest of 11 children, he was a role model and inspiration to his younger brothers and sisters, David, Kathleen, Dennis (deceased), Mary Asher, Anthony, Eileen, Colleen Rowland, Neil, Robert, and Cecilia Temple. Steve attended St. Gregory Seminary for high school. Exceptionally bright, he was a leader in his class, excelling in both academics and athletics, and served as salutatorian of his graduating class. He attended college at The Athenaeum of Ohio, earning a BA in Sacred Theology.

Following his graduation, he traveled throughout Europe before returning to the US and settling in Cincinnati. It was here he found his passion for the field of computers and began his career at First National Bank where he was head of Computer Operations and then AVP of Future Banking. It was during these years he met Michelle Beirne, his wife of 35 years, and they had 3 children - Shannon, Laura and Katie. Following his 17 years at First National Bank, he launched a computer consulting business, ROI Technologies.

Steve was a caring father, always encouraging and supporting his children's academic, professional, and personal interests. He cherished the family's vacations to Disney World, Sanibel Island, Europe, the Caribbean, and RV trips "out west", which sparked his children's love of travel. He was a constant figure in the stands at his daughters' dance recitals, dance team competitions, soccer games, and tennis matches. He was a proud and loving grandfather to his seven grandchildren. To all, he was a consistent example of integrity, gratitude, hard work, and humility.

Steve's legacy of community service is second to none. Over his life, he dedicated thousands of hours to organizations across the Cincinnati area. He highly valued education and volunteered at Lower Price Hill Community School and St. Veronica Catholic School for many years. Steve served as Treasurer of the Turpin High School Boosters, playing an important role in major improvements and expansions to the football stadium. He served on the board of the United Coalition of Animals, providing technological support for the launch of a retail consignment shop and spay/neuter clinic, and volunteered at the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Hamilton County, where he oversaw finances and IT. For the last 10 years of his life, Steve was President/Vice President of Friends of the Little Miami State Park, leading the organization in its work to maintain and improve the 50-mile Little Miami State Park paved trail. Steve's positive impact on his family, friends, and the Cincinnati community will long be felt.
